THE BOYFRIEND

the boyfriendThe musical extravaganza, "The Boyfriend" starring Twiggy and Tommy Tune is now available for the first time on DVD here in the States through the Warner Archive Collection. The movie is based on the award winning play "The Boyfriend" by Sandy Wilson. It takes place at a seaside theater in England during the late 1920's when the star of the show (Glenda Jackson) broke her leg and had to be replaced by the understudy (Twiggy) just when a movie producer (Vladek Sheybal) comes to see the play and wants to make a movie of it. What can I say? It definitely has Ken Russell written all over it! I am an Anglophile and would normally enjoy the film but a two glaring things made me not. First, the movie is about a half an hour too long even though this print is the original length. And two, Twiggy cannot sing nor act! I have never seen the original play to compare the two. I did enjoy Glenda Jackson's (Cameo?) and Barbara Windsor (Carry On Films, Eastenders) and the movie producer. The film quality is great with vivid colors considering the age of the print and Warner's notation on their website about how they do not restore their films! If you are a true fan of Russell's work, then you'll like this. The only extra is a vintage short about the making of the film.

MARLOWE

MarloweWarner Archives has released for the first time to DVD, the movie "Marlowe" starring James Garner and Gayle Hunnicutt. The movie is based on the Raymond Chandler novel "Little Sister" written in 1949. Garner played the title character Phillip Marlowe in Los Angeles running a small detective agency where he is trying to find the brother of the client that he is employed for an oddly named "Ofamay Quest"! This leads to a blackmailed actress, Mavis Weld and a slew of ice-pick murders! A martial arts expert played by the awesome Bruce Lee (in his first American film!) comes by and tries to intimidate Marlowe but to no avail. The movie has a great starring cast including Carroll O'Conner (All In The Family, In The Heat of the Night) Rita Moreno (West Side Story), William Daniels (St. Elsewhere, Knight Rider) , Jackie Coogan (Addams Family), Kenneth Tobey (The Thing) and Bruce Lee (Green Hornet, Enter The Dragon). Don't get me wrong, I totally enjoyed the movie but it played more like a TV movie than a theatrical one. The feel and look of it. The extra on this disc is a trailer of the movie. MICKEY ROONEY & JUDY GARLAND

Mickey RooneyFour of the best films that Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland have done are now out on DVD for the first time, which the pair made between 1939 to 1943. Unfortunately, none of the original film negatives exist anymore so the film quality is not remastered by the film prints are quite clear! Both Rooney and Garland were the most popular duo in the late 30's to mid 40's. Both winning Oscars in their lifetime. These four musicals were very popular and all of them were a sort of "Let's Put On A Show" type movies. The extras on this set are worth the price of the set alone! The movie stars Peter Sellers (Pink Panther Flims), Terry Thomas (Munsters Go Home) and Peggy Mount (Bless This House). Great acting performances all around! NEVER LET GO

NEVER LET GOVCI has brought out on DVD one of only a few films that show a darker side of Peter Sellers in a drama entitled "Never Let Go!" where he plays a ruthless crime boss! The film actually stars Richard Todd (The Dambreakers) as John Cummings, a salesman that loses everything but before all that, buys a car he can't pay for it which then the car is stolen and tries to get it back! Elizabeth Sellars (The Barefoot Contessa) plays his wife. Interesting to see Sellers in a sadistic role! The film was produced in 1960. There is a photo gallery and an original trailer.

THE OUR GANG COLLECTION 1938-1944

Our GangThe Our Gang Collection from Warner Archives are the shorts that were made by MGM from 1938-1944. Hal Roach made the "Our Gang" shorts also known as "The Little Rascals" from 1922 until he sold the shorts to MGM in 1938. You can tell the difference between the Hal Roach shorts and the MGM ones because of the lack of spontaneity of the children going straight to scripted scenes as opposed to the real off the cuff performances. This set covers the remaining 52 shorts that were made until 1944. Warner Archives have done a wonderful job of restoring the shorts to their original length and picture quality. Some of the original kids did show up in the shorts but at the time they were getting far too old to be in them. Tommy Bond (Butch) and Carl Switzer (Alfalfa) left in 1940 while Darla Hood left in 1941 and George McFarland (Spanky) stayed until 1942. Billy Thomas (Buckwheat) was the only one to stay until the end. Each short ran approximately 11 minutes and were shown in theaters before the feature movie was shown. The most noticeable member of the gang was pre Baretta and prison bound Robert Blake! These shorts were not as good as the original Hal Roach comedies but there were a few gems such as Alfalfa's Aunt, Cousin Wilber, Goin' Fishin' and Going to Press to name a few! There are no extras on this set.

Most episodes are uncut. Each short runs approx 11 mins each.

VERBOTEN!

VERBOTEN!One of Sam Fuller's first directorial efforts was Verboten! , First time on DVD thanks to Warner Archives. The movie stars James Best, a great actor before he forever became know for the "Dukes of Hazzard". He played the part of Sgt. David Brent perfectly, a soldier that was saved by a German girl and quits the Army and marries her in the last days of World War II. The question is, does she really love him or is she merely using him to get food and shelter? The script is a little weak but the acting talent makes up for it! The only extra on this disc is the original trailer from the movie. Sam Fuller went on to do "The Big Red One" in 1981 among other films.
