A HISTORY OF SCOTLAND

A History of ScotlandA History of Scotland has been presented for the first time here in the States through BBC Warner Home Video. Spanning the centuries and over 5 DVDs, the series takes a look from the very beginnings of Scotland in the 900's AD to present day with political problems that plague the country. The series is narrated by Archeologist Neil Oliver. The series lasted 10 episodes over 2 seasons. The series itself took over two years and about $4,000,000 to produce. The first season ends with the Union of Scotland with England in 1707. A History of Scotland was one of the most ambitious projects that the BBC has ever handled. There have been numerous complaints of the series for the most part being too "British" in the telling of the Scots and their culture. It comes across being too "One-sided". Also to have an archeologist instead of a bona-fide historian speak, angered some viewers. Some academic advisors to the series resigned over the debacle. All in all, a visually stunning story filled with different points of view however right or wrong they may be of how Scotland was formed. The only extra on this set is a bonus disc with another shorter documentary called "How the Celts Saved Britian".

ALBERT'S MEMORIAL

Albert's MemorialAlbert's Memorial is a dark comedy about three British World War II Army buddies that one is dying and his last wish is to be buried in Germany. The two stars in this film is Sir David Jason (Only Fools and Horses) as Harry and David Warner (Time Bandits) as Frank. Albert is played by Michael Jayston (Doctor Who) the dying man. Getting Albert to Germany is another matter and is somewhat humorous to see the casket with Albert strapped to the top of a cab owned by Harry to transport him to his final resting place. The two actors work off each other wonderfully well and is an enjoyable yet short (69 minutes) movie. There are no extras on this disc.

APPARITIONS-COMPLETE MINISERIES

ApparitionsApparitions, a BBC 6 part miniseries is now available through BFS Entertainment. Starring Martin Shaw (The Professionals) plays a priest that examines miracles by other priests to be bestowed Sainthood but whom also carried out exorcisms. It was initially Martin Shaw's idea for the series, because for the longest time, he has wanted to play and Exorcist! The miniseries is not for the squeamish, especially what happens in episode one! Gruesome! Well acted and very tense! Well written by Joe Ahearne (Doctor Who). Special effects were spot on and made the production look like a motion picture instead of TV. Honestly, it's the best thing to come out of the BBC, apart from Doctor Who in years! There are sadly no extras with this set. This would be perfect to show the behind the scenes, but they chose not to. Highly recommended!

BEAU BRUMMELL-THIS CHARMING MAN

Beau Brummell

Beau Brummell was a gambler, socialite and the inventor of the "Dandy" way of dressing! People would come from miles around in the 18th Century to see how he dressed! This costume drama premiered on BBC in 2006 and BBC America in 2007. Brummell was closely associated with Lord Byron and Prince George, son of George III. The sets and the music are extremely well done! This disc also has Cast Filmographies and how Brummell's life has gone into pop culture.

BECOMING CHARLEY CHASE

bECOMING cHARLEY cHASEVCI and All Day Entertainment have come out with a collection of shorts and surviving material from the comedian Charley Chase entitled "Becoming Charley Chase". The shorts cover some of the time he was with the Keystone Cops, Hal Roach comedies and comedies that were directed by the man himself! Charley Chase's real name was Charles Parrott. He started in films in 1912 and then eventually was with the Keystone Cops and in 1923 when Harold Lloyd left Hal Roach studios; they needed another comedian so Charley stayed with Roach for a while until he started his own films. This set has 41 shorts from the years 1915-1925. Some of the stars that joined Charley were Oliver Hardy and The Little Rascals! The prints have not been restored which is a shame but understandable but it is better to see them period than not to see them at all! The music for this set is new music by the Snark Ensemble. The special features on this set include a documentary on Charley Chase, surviving footage from a 1924 short, a short documentary about the music group that made the new music for the shorts, audio commentaries on every short and a conversation with the daughter of Charley Chase done in 1997 among other extras. A welcome set to watch!

The movie stars Helen Bonham Carter (The King's Speech) as Elizabeth Taylor and Dominic West (The Hour, The Wire) as Richard Burton. The story is about the latter years both stars and a revival of a play by Noel Coward, Private Lives they acted in together. It was the first play Taylor appeared in. It also shows how their lives had changed since they have been apart! This would be the last time they acted together before Burton passed away a few short years later. CELEBRITY BOWLING

CELEBRITY BOWLINGAh, the 70's! There was not much on then and most would think that Bowling would be a mind numbingly boring sport to watch but you would be so wrong! Celebrity Bowling is now available from S'mores Entertainment! What makes this DVD set most watchable is the premise that you have TV and sometimes Movie stars battling it out on two lanes specially constructed at the KTTA studios in Los Angeles. The show ran from 1971 to 1978 with 144 30- minute episodes. Hosted by Jed Allen and with at the time, a Bowling champion to provide commentary on the stars. Two teams of two would play to see who from the studio audience would win prizes! The show was revived three different times over the years in 1987, 2008 and 2011. Such stars that were on the show were William Shatner (Star Trek), Hugh O'Brien (Wyatt Earp), Leslie Nielsen (Police Squad), Michael Douglas (Wall Street), Don Adams (Get Smart), Robert Culp (I Spy) and Adam West (Batman) to name a few! It really wasn't boring at all watching the shows and presumably all 144 episodes do exist. 15 episodes from the 7 year run are on these three discs. There are no extras on this set. Hopefully S'mores will put out more on DVD in the near future!

A blurb from Acorn Media about Day One: This Emmy-winning historically accurate tells the complex and moving story of the Manhattan Project. This movie was based on the non-fiction book written by Peter Wyden and produced by Aaron Spelling for CBS Hallmark Hall of Fame. From the beginning of her reign to present, the BBC traveled with the Queen for a year and a half starting in mid 2010. For 86 years of age, there is no sign of the Queen slowing down. This 3 part documentary shows just how much she does in a course of a day and how much the British public loves her now for some 20 years ago, she was not well liked and there was talk of seeing just how important the monarchy really was! Interviews with the Royal family and historians, this was a fast 3 hours that flew by! Great stuff! The extra on this disc is an official video montage of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. ELVIS-THE MINISERIES

Elvis-The MiniseriesA blurb from Starz Entertainment about Elvis: The Miniseries: Jonathan Rhys Meyers delivers a definitive performance in the acclaimed mini series event that depicts Elvis from the 50's teen outcast to worldwide sensation, through his grim decline to his spectacular 68 comeback.

There has been many versions of Elvis's live told through film and TV. The miniseries is a well done production in the cannon of Elvis biopics. This miniseries was shown over 2 nights in 2005. This biopic shows the beginnings of the legend up through the 1968 Comeback special. Jonathan Rhys Meyers does a good job as Elvis although he doesn't really look like the king, but he does and adequate performance trying get the subtle nuances of his character. Also in the cast is Randy Quaid as Colonel Tom Parker playing him not over the top as in other biopics and Camryn Meinham as Elvis' Mother Gladys looking eerily dead on as his mother and Robert Patrick as Elvis' Father Vernon. An interesting side note, the actor who portrays Red West in the miniseries is none other than Red West's son, John Boyd West! The miniseries has the full cooperation of the Elvis estate and for the first time, Elvis' actual recordings are used. This disc also includes deleted scenes and is in 5.1 Surround sound. As a collector's extra the outer sleeve for the disc is black velvet!

FUTTOCKS END

Futtocks EndA blurb from SRO about Futtock's End: Futtock's End is a classic British 'sound effect' comedy that stands in illustrious company alongside Peter Sellers' Running Jumping and Standing Still, Eric Sykes' The Plank and Ronnie Barker's A Home of One Own, The Picnic and By The Sea.

I have always been a big fan of the Two Ronnies and with the Silent Comedy shorts they have done together and separate including this one. They did two together that were "The Picnic" and "By The Sea". This story is about a weekend gathering at a decaying country home called "Futtock's End" while having saucy mishaps going on between the staff and his guests. This short film stars Ronnie Barker as General Futtock and Michael Horden as his trusty butler with Richard O' Sullivan (Man About The House). This disc also includes an audio commentary by the director of the film, Bob Kellett.

GIDEON'S TRUMPET-TV MOVIEGideon's Trumpet

A blurb from Acorn Media about Gideon's Trumpet: In one of the finest and final performance of his distinguished career, Henry Fonda portrays Clarence Gideon, the destitute prisoner whose handwritten plea for justice changed the course of American legal history.

This was Henry Fonda's penultimate performance as Clarence Gideon, a destitute prisoner that changes the course of legal history. The TV movie tells the story behind the landmark, 1960's case of "Right to Counsel". This movie aired on the Hallmark Hall of Fame in 1980. I remember having to do a piece of this movie in my drama class in High School. The movie also had a great cast including Jose Ferrer, John Houseman, Sam Jaffe, Lane Smith, Dean Jagger and Fay Wray in her last screen performance. This disc includes Cast Filmographies.

VIDEO

The video quality is so-so. The TV movie was done on film and there are a quite a few specks and dirt. Not really any fault of Acorn Media. Source material almost 30 years old will tend to have that. The TV Movie is 103 minutes long.

A funny British miniseries premiered in 1990 on Channel 4 in Britain called "The Gravy Train". The miniseries stars the great late Ian Richarson and equally great Francesca Annis. Christoph Waltz plays the bumbling pawn in Spearpoint's (Ian Richarson) plan for Eastern Europe. HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES-1983

HOUNDThere have been quite a few versions of this classic Sherlock Holmes story, but to me, this version of "The Hound of the Baskervilles" is the best of them all! Not knocking the fine jobs that Rathbone and Cushing did with their versions, but what this one apart from the rest is that it is underplayed and you don't necessary know who the murderer is right off the bat like in the other versions of the movie. It also has one of the best Sherlock Holmes in quite awhile is Ian Richarson! The movie also benefits from a well acted class of support players such as Denholm Elliott, Brian Blessed, Eleanor Bron, Edward Judd, Ronald Lacy, Connie Booth and Martin Shaw. I don't know why but it sounds like that Martin Shaw's voice was dubbed for some reason. Odd!

A blurb from Acorn Media about Housewife, 49: Written and starring beloved British actress Victoria Wood, Housewife, 49 presents a moving glimpse into life on the home front through the eyes of a resolute woman gradually awakening to life.

This TV movie was based on the World War II diaries of one Nella Last. The Mass Observation project was started in 1939 to examine the lives of ordinary people asking them to start a diary about their feeling on politics and everyday things. During wartime, Nella wrote about her life and struggles, which were poignant and moving. She continued writing her diaries until her death in 1968. Victoria Wood won a BAFTA Award for her portrayal of Nella. The movie has not been broadcast as of yet here in the States. THE KING SPEAKS

THE KINGS SPEAKSThe King Speaks is now available for the first time through BFS Entertainment Ltd. An absolutely fascinating look at King George VI and the students that were patients of Lionel Logue, the speech therapist that controlled, not cured, the King's stuttering problem. The documentary was produced but Channel 4 in England. It was interesting to hear the patients talk about Logue and the King and seeing actual archival footage of the King speaking publicly and footage that was edited for the masses that hides some of the stuttering. It is a well rounded documentary that does not slow down at any point. There are no extras on this disc. Highly recommended. A perfect companion to the motion picture!

KISSOLOGY-VOLUME 3

Kiss Vol 3This volume is supposedly the last volume in the "trilogy" but possibly not if Gene Simmons has anything to do with it! This set consists of the Kiss years on these discs from 1992-2000 and has on a fourth disc, there earliest recorded footage of one of their concerts in Queens New York on December 22, 1973 with makeup but no elaborate costumes and there is a special fifth disc that has a special concert for a radio station in California back in 1996. I have been a fan of the group since the late 1970's. Not a huge fan, but one that respects what music they did. There are concerts on these discs from the Palace of Auburn Hills in Michigan in 1992, a MTV Unplugged special from 1995, Tiger Stadium in 1996, a mini concert of the MTV Video Awards on the Brooklyn Bridge, Dodger Stadium on Halloween 1998, a special mini concert for the movie Detroit Rock City and their "Last" concert for Pay Per View in 2000. The set also includes "Easter Eggs" which are footage from "Carnival of Souls" album, sound check footage and a performance of 2,000 Man at midnight during the Millennium concert.

LENNON NAKED

LENNON NAKEDLennon Naked starring Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who) as one of the most influential members of the legendary rock group "The Beatles" was a 2008 BBC production presented for the first time through BBC Warner! The movie chronicled Lennon's life from 1964 to 1971. The death of Brian Epstein, a surrogate father-figure to Lennon started the ball rolling to the breaking up of the band and his first wife, which in that time he married Yoko Ono. A lot of it had to do with the alienation of his father that left Lennon 17 years earlier. The movie was good as a whole, but a few things whittled away at me. First was the stretch of having a 46 year old Eccleston playing a 23 year old. Eccleston pulled it off well enough but sometimes it was too obvious! Secondly, the movie was not long enough to flesh out any of the characters. Having said that, it was a very good movie! There are no extras on this disc. MALICE IN WONDERLAND

Malice In WonderlandMalice in Wonderland is now available on DVD through S'mores Entertainment. The made for TV movie starred Elizabeth Taylor as gossip columnist Louella Parsons and Jane Alexander as the infamous Hedda Hopper. Between the two, they tore up the town with the entire celebrity goings on in Hollywood way before there ever was a TMZ! Louella Parsons came first and had a powerful influence in the industry and was hated by many an actor or actress. But Hedda Hopper was most reviled of the two for she was much more vicious to the acting community than Parsons. Jane Alexander won an Emmy for her portrayal of Hopper. Interestingly enough, Parsons daughter was known as "Baby Parsons" in some of the early Charlie Chaplin silent films and Hopper's son, William Hopper is most famous as Detective Paul Drake in the "Perry Mason TV series. MISTER ROBERTS

Mister Roberts

Acorn Media presents Mister Roberts-The play originally shown live on NBC in 1984. Starring Robert Hays as Mister Roberts and an all-star cast it is based on the 1948 play of the same name. The play in itself is pretty good but it doesn't do the play justice because seeing live theater is much more in depth that watching a taped play which you tend to lose that live feel. Having said that, the video transfer is great with no video dropout that I could see. The only extra on the set is a text history of the Mister Roberts play.

NOT ONLY BUT ALWAYS TV MOVIE

A blurb from Acorn Media about Not Only But Always… This Not Only But Alsofunny and moving drama probes the turbulent relationship between two performers credited with inventing modern British Satire. Tall, handsome, brilliantly glib Peter Cook and undersized musical prodigy Dudley Moore met as undergraduates in 1960 and became international stars as half of the legendary comedy revue Beyond The Fringe. Traveling from London's West End to Broadway and Hollywood to Peter's tragic death in 1995, this is their story.

This is my first venture into TV movie reviews! This was a well done movie that showed the genesis and genius of one of the greatest comedy duos of all time, Peter Cook & Dudley Moore. What set this movie apart are the uncanny likenesses of the two actors and the portrayals of them. The movie was mainly done in flashbacks. The movie is defiantly for mature audiences for language and nudity! I have had the pleasure of watching their shows and movies and watching this biopic never bored me or was uninteresting. Both men had unfortunate endings to their lives. In 1995 Peter Cook died of a stomach hemorrhage due to alcoholism and Dudley Moore died of a disease called PSP in 2002. The disc has an Audio commentary by the writer/director of the movie along with cast filmographies. The movie is approximately 100 minutes long.

The video quality is great! The movie is presented in Widescreen.

THE ROYAL WEDDING

THE ROYAL WEDDINGWilliam & Kate: The Royal Wedding is now available on BBC Warner Home Video. All the Pomp & Circumstance, all the Pageantry, all the furor of the Royal Wedding is now over. But, now you can own the Royal Wedding covering the highlights of the wedding now! This DVD covers the main highlights of the wedding, from leaving the palace to the Cathedral with the complete ceremony and back to the Palace. The highlights and wedding last just over 2 hours and there is a BBC TV Special bonus about the beginning romance of the two up to the wedding. The wedding was covered by BBC News and is quite entertaining and brisk. There is an omission that personally I would have liked to see on the DVD was when the Royal couple drove away in the Aston Martin. There was not a lot of background during the wedding like there was on other network broadcast which makes it a little more interesting. Get your copy at www.bbcamericashop.com and own a piece of history!

SERIOUS CHARGE

Serious chargeA nice quiet little film from Britain from 1959! Not! Starring Anthony Quayle and making his motion picture debut, Cliff Richard! This is also the first time on film that he sings is signature song "Living Doll" plus "No Turning Back" and "Mad About You". The story is that an unmarried Reverend (Anthony Quayle) is a new Vicar in a small English town. He accuses a young teenager of being responsible for the death of a young teenage girl. To get revenge, the teenage boy cooks up a story to make the Vicar look bad. Also in the mix, a woman who would like to know the vicar better in more than a friendly way is rejected by him and is not very happy and shows it and is also a respected member of the town, which complicates things. SHADOW WARRIORS SEASON 1

Shadow Warriors

A blurb from Ronin Entertainment about Shadow Warriors Season 1: When a small child suddenly becomes the Shogun of feudal-era Japan, evil plots and treachery begin to fill the corridors of power. Exiled ninja clan leader Hattori Hanzo (Chiba) now disguised as the humble owner of a bathhouse, is secretly reenlisted by one of the Shogun's most trusted allies to help keep the peace.

I have never seen this show but have heard of it and am a big fan of Sonny Chiba! The Shadow Warriors was a series that lasted 5 seasons that dealt with the ninjas that protected the king of Japan back in the 16th century. The show ran from 1980 to 1985. This was one of Quentin Tarantino's favorite shows and had Sonny Chiba in his Kill Bill movies as the character Hattori Hanzo that was the same as in the series! When this show was on TV here in the states it was edited for nudity. These prints are the original Japanese versions, uncut with the nudity left in. There is a way of watching the series either in Japanese or with English subtitles. There is also a new interview with Sonny Chiba in Japanese with English subtitles as well. This box set comprises the first 27 episodes of the series with an 8-page color booklet with linear notes from the show.

SHERLOCK HOLMES-THE SIGN OF FOUR

Sign of FourIan Richardson is Sherlock Holmes once again in "The Sign of Four" the first of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes novels! This production was shot after "Hound of the Baskervilles". Quite a packed movie with side show freaks, a one-legged man, a prison treasure map, a box of Diamonds and a raw meat eating native! The producer Sy Weintraub wanted to film a series of Holmes stories with Richardson but sadly only two were made. The movie also benefits from a well acted class of support players such as Thorley Waters and Clive Merrison. I really enjoyed the portrayal from Richardson and the video quality is quite adequate. There are no extras on this set.

THE STRANGE CASE OF THE END OF CIVILIZATION AS WE KNOW ITStrange Case

In between Fawlty Towers Series 1 and Series 2, John Cleese made a strange but funny short film entitled "The Strange Case of the End of Civilization as We Know It!" Basically the plot is that the grandson of Sherlock Holmes and his trusty companion, Dr Watson with his Bionic Nose, tracks down the only living descendant of Professor Moriarity. This is a low budget spoof on Sherlock Holmes and the mystery genre as well! The film also stars Arthur Lowe as Dr Watson, Connie Booth, Delholm Elliott, Joss Ackland and Nick Tate to name a few.

VIDEO

Lots of scratches and film dirt and it also looks like that it has been taken from a VHS Master because there is dropout during the titles and the first part of the film.

THE TOMORROW SHOW-WITH THE BEATLES

TomorrowTom Synder's Tomorrow Show was a staple of late night talk shows that lasted for many, many years on NBC and CBS before he retired. This 2-disc set has the famous John Lennon interview Tom did in 1975. It was rebrodcasted the day after Lennon was shot December 9, 1980. This set also includes the Satellite interview with Paul & Linda McCartney from London just before a performance in 1979 and a 1982 interview with Ringo Starr and wife Barbara Bach. Oddly enough there is an interview with Angie Dickinson about her part in the movie "Dressed to Kill". What was strange was the interview and how both people were quite embarrassed! Tom Synder has always been a consummate interview and quite humorous as well to calm the stars when interviewing. There are no special features to this set but still is a fascinating look at Beatles history.

The video quality is great for the age of the program! Each episode runs approx 46 mins each except the tribute, which ran 66 mins.

Tony Robinson has had a wide and diverse life and shares his experiences with wit and history in "Tony Robinson's Cunning Night Out!" Robinson offers hilarious tales, family stories with acting and historical anecdotes. He has also ran for public office in Britain, has written 19 children's books and is most famously known the world over as "Baldrick" the hapless servant through the centuries in the comedy series "Blackadder" with always a "Cunning" plan which never seems to work! It is a very funny one-man stage show! It is for more of a mature audience with the language that is presented. The disc also includes extra footage of the stage show.

TOP GEAR-50 YEARS OF BOND CARS

TOP GEAR 50Top Gear-50 Years of Bond Cars is now available through BBC Video! I am a huge fan of the UK version of Top Gear and a mega fan of Bond Films so it is perfect that they have blended it together and have come up with Bond cars through the ages! The show is a quick 60 minutes showing the original ideas of the Bond cars from the creator himself, Ian Fleming through what he wrote in the novels. Guest that was interviewed was the director of "Diamonds Are Forever" and "The Man With the Golden Gun", Guy Hamilton, Two actors who portrayed James Bond, Sir Roger Moore and Daniel Craig and Producer Michael Wilson. TRAILERS FROM HELL-VOLUME 1

TRAILERS FROM HELL VOL 1What a neat idea to revive old movie trailers from the past is to do what a website has done by getting some well known directors to do commentary on the trailers! Best of the Trailers From Hell Volume 1 from Shout Factory gathers 20 genre related trailers and runs them either the way they were shown in theaters or with a separate audio commentary from a genre director with plenty of info from the movie crammed in each 2-2 ½ minutes mini movie! Most of the trailers are in surprisingly in good shape considering the age and most film trailers are not saved and disappear usually without a trace if not for film collectors and people that have a love for movies. The way it started was by a website (www.trailersfromhell.com). There are over 400 entries on the site and is well done. Such movies that the trailers are from are: The Birds, Blood and Roses, Corruption, The Curse of Frankenstein, Curse of the Werewolf, Earth Vs The Flying Saucers, Forbidden Planet and many more. There is as a special bonus, two vintage cartoons and the 1933 film "Vampire Bat" in really good condition. Well worth the buy for a lover of Movies!

The video quality is quite good! Some trailers are somewhat grainy and scratched but overall, very good.

TRAILERS FROM HELL VOLUME 2

TRAILERS FROM HELL VOL 2The second in a series of Trailers From Hell DVDs are now available through Shout Factory! Audio commentaries on movie trailers are back! With more directors giving juicy tidbits on each trailer! Some of the trailers on this edition are Devil Ship Pirates, Donavan's Brain, Flesh Gordon, Gorgo to name a few! The special bonus on this disc is the anamorphic widescreen debut of the film "The Little Shop of Horrors" in great shape considering the movie is in Public Domain and most prints floating around are generally in bad shape! Like the first volume, "The Trailers From Hell" logo is at the bottom of all the trailers which I don't care for but other than that, I like the two volumes! Again, well worth the buy!

TRAPPED-A COMEDY TRILOGY

TrappedA blurb from BFS Video about "Trapped": From three first-class comedy writers, Jonathan Harvey, Simon Nye and Tim Firth comes this comic trilogy in which obsessive characters-desperate to break free from their self-imposed prisons-face their moments of truth.

Trapped-a comedy trilogy. When I first saw the paperwork for this, I thought this could be fun, and it was! The premise of "Trapped" is 3 stories that find their situations, "Trapped". One is trapped in an obsessive world of "The Sound Of Music". The next is trapped in an old family mansion that the occupant just wants to be loved and finally, my personal favorite, trapped on a roof of an appliance store and trying to get away without being electrocuted. The cast is just as good with Caroline Quentin, Martin Clunes, Mark Benton and Richard Wilson. Produced by Granada Television in 2004.

The video quality is great. The trilogy runs approx 150 minutes.

Trek Nation

Trek NationTrek Nation, an interesting look on Star Trek fandom from a different point of view from Film Buff Pictures and MPI Home Video. This documentary takes a fascinating look at Star Trek from the son of the creator of the series, Gene Roddenberry! The doc shows how Eugene Roddenberry was not a fan of Star Trek and only after his father died did he ventured or "Trek" his way to conventions and interviewed all sorts of fans as well as celebrities. I enjoyed it a lot being a long time fan of the show and the whole feel of the doc which showed fans as people and not nut jobs like the other documentary did, "Trekkies". You have interviews with people on Trek and behind the scenes people and other celebs that had no tie to the show other than being huge fans. There are also rare home movies from Eugene's personal collection. This 2 disc set includes as extras, a really cool audio commentary by Roddenberry and Trevor Roth that is picture in picture where you can see them talking about the movie while its going on, extended interviews with people already interviewed, a short featurette on the fans of Star Trek, and excerpts of Gene Roddenberry's Hollywood Stars Walk of Fame ceremony and more! If you are a Star Trek fan, I highly recommend this DVD set!

TROUBLE IN THE SKY-AKA CONE OF SILENCE

TROUBLE IN THE SKYVCI has brought out on DVD a rare British Action film with the American title "Trouble In The Sky" which the DVD is actually the original British version "Cone of Silence". The movie stars Bernard Lee (M, James Bond Films), Peter Cushing (Hammer Films), George Sanders (Original Movie The Saint) and Gordon Jackson (TV's The Professionals). The movie centers on an investigation into a number of crashes with a new jetliner called "Atlas Aviation Phoenix". The movie was also based on a true story about the De Havilland comet, a plane that had terrible trouble taking off on very hot conditions. Great acting performances all around! The film was produced in 1960, a mere two years before Bernard Lee was to start his long career as "M" in the James Bond film franchise! There are no extras on this disc.

VIDEO

The quality is quite good considering the age of the print.

Ultraman S1 V1ULTRAMAN 66-COMPLETE SERIES VOLUME 1

A short blurb from BCI-Eclipse about Ultraman Series 1 Volume 1: Ultraman comes to DVD for the first time. This three DVD set includes the first 20 episodes of the first series, uncut and remastered, of the original Tsuburaya Productions television series created by Eiji Tsuburaya, the special effects genius who created one of the greatest film monsters of all time, GODZILLA.

Ultraman was the show I would watch every weekday mornings on summer break at 8 am on Channel 44 in Tampa Florida in the mid to late 1970's! I am a huge fan of the Godzilla monster movies and this show showed them in almost every episode! They were dubbed in English and were fun to watch. This set consists of the first 20 episodes. Each episode can be watched in either the original Japanese version or the American dubbed version. Since these episodes are uncut for the first time, the American version was shortened for our TV market and when the full version is shown it sometimes is in Japanese but subtitled in English to link the missing US dubbing, which is great to finally watch the whole episode how it was supposed to be shown. This show spawned several sequels series such as Ultraman Tiga,Ultra 7 and Ultraman 80 to name a few. The special features in this set are an interview with the original American dub team who were the same group that did the Speed Racer series. Also there is the US Version of the opening theme song. Since they show the opening, which is longer than the American version, they don't have ending music or credits. But that's ok, considering the episodes are uncut and remastered!

VIDEO

The video quality is absolutely fantastic! Remastered from the original negatives. Episodes are uncut. It's very nice to watch these compared to the bad film prints they use to have in syndication. There is also a Play All feature.

Was originally recorded in Mono. Audio is in Mono but very clear!

This three DVD set includes the final 19 episodes of the first series, uncut and remastered, of the original Tsuburaya Productions television series created by Eiji Tsuburaya, the special effects genius who created one of the greatest film monsters of all time, GODZILLA.

VIETNAM-THE TEN THOUSAND DAY WAR

Vietnam-10000 Day WarVietnam-The 10,000 Day War is out from Time Life and VSC Video. The Canadian documentary series itself is one of the best done series about the Vietnam War along the lines of "The World at War" series! The series was narrated by Richard Basehart (Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea). The series is an honest unflinching look at the war from all aspects with experts and military personnel interviewed. The series was written by CNN's Peter Arnett back in 1981. Regardless of what the packaging states that the series has been restored from broadcast masters, nothing has been done to restore the picture quality but by watching the episodes, you can notice that the series was taken from videotape masters and not from original film elements because there is occasionally some video "tearing" so no restoration could actually be done! Apart from all of that, I highly recommend this series for its straight forward storytelling! There are no extras on this set.

The video quality is good! Some episodes are somewhat grainy but overall, very good.

WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE-SEASON 1

Who S1The first season of "Who Do You Think You Are?" is now available through Acorn Media. It was shown on NBC last year and was based on a popular British TV series of the same name. There are 7 celebrates that are given the genealogical treatment to see where they truly came from! The celebrities are Sarah Jessica Parker, Emmitt Smith, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Broderick, Brooke Shields, Susan Sarandon and Spike Lee. The show travels all over the world in search of the ancestors in question. The show was produced here in the States by Lisa Kudrow. WHY WE LEFT EARTH-THE NASA MISSIONS

Why We EarthWhen We Left Earth is an interesting and entertaining look at the NASA program through the years from the Mercury program to the Space Shuttle. With cooperation from NASA and the Discovery Channel the series runs 6 hour-long episodes to celebrate NASA's 50 years of exploration. With candid interviews and some never before seen footage the set is a treat for any Space fan. There is a complete omission of the Apollo- Soyuz mission and while the overall video quality is quite good, the original mission films in the extras section are unrestored and are as washed out and grainy as when I saw them back in the 1970's. I still would recommend this set for the simple fact of the footage and interviews alone.
