CITY BENEATH THE SEA

City Beneath The SeaCity Beneath the Sea fascinated me when I was a child for I watched all the Irwin Allen TV shows of the time, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Lost In Space, Time Tunnel and Land of the Giants! And at the time the TV movie had it all going for it: Underwater adventure, Intrigue, special effects and story. How the memory cheats! Don't get me wrong, I think to this day that this movie is still good, but the older you get you tend to see all the plot holes and the acting not as good as you remember etc but for its time Irwin was trying to get this series off the ground. The movie was a pilot for the TV series that sadly was not picked up. It starred Stuart Whitman, Robert Wagner, Joseph Cotton and Richard Basehart as the President to name a few. The story in a nutshell is a former builder of an underwater city comes back to become the commander of it, when thieves come to steal the priceless H128 material (Gold) in the city's vaults! And if that wasn't bad enough there is an asteroid that is heading towards Earth and is to hit Pacifica unless the scientists in the city can divert it with missiles. There was a 15 minute presentation in 1969 that was a mini-pilot for City Beneath the Sea that starred Glenn Corbett and Lloyd Bochner which is sadly not on this disc. This movie was available on DVD in the UK but this is the first time that is has been made available stateside. Kudos to Warner Archive for releasing it finally on DVD! There is a trailer for the TV movie as an extra.

EARTH II

Earth IIEarth II was an interesting premise about a colony of humans aboard a giant space station circling the Earth. It was a pilot for a TV series in 1971 which was shown on CBS. NASA and Rockwell were consulted on the accuracy of space travel. The story is that in the near future there is a giant self supporting space station with over 2000 people from different nations on it and is commanded by David Seville (Gary Lockwood). There is a warhead that circles the Earth and very close to Earth II every few hours. The People Republic of China has sent it up which refuses to remove the warhead or will blow it up if anybody tampers with it. Scientists aboard the station go out and retrieve the warhead and try to disconnect it and are partially successful but the bomb is still active and it is up to the scientist to push it towards the sun so it will detonate safely. A well done movie with good acting and great special effects for its time to be a TV movie! Warner Archive has put this movie on DVD for the first time. The quality is quite good considering the age of the prints. There is a trailer of the TV movie.

GENESIS II

Genesis IIGenesis II was the first of three attempts for Gene Roddenberry to get a new Science Fiction TV series off the ground. This story deals with Dylan Hunt in 1979 who was working on a NASA project dealing with suspended animation where he volunteered to be put into deep freeze when a massive earthquake closed off anyway to get to Dylan and was asleep for 154 years. When he awoke in the year 2133, he was awakened by a group of NASA descendents known as PAX, which means "Peace" in Latin. In this future, rival groups called the "Tyranians" want to repair a nuclear reactor to fuel a missile silo to destroy PAX but Dylan and the group stop them in time. The 1973 TV movie pilot was shown on CBS and stars Alex Cord as Dylan Hunt, Mariette Hartley as Lyra-a and Ted Cassidy as Islah. Warner Archive has put this movie on DVD for the first time. A good attempt to start a series! There are no extras on this disc.

MAN FROM ATLANTIS-PILOT

Man From Atlantis PilotIn the fall of 1977, a TV movie pilot was shown on NBC that starred Patrick Duffy, one year before his iconic role as Bobby Ewing on the "Dallas" TV series. This movie was "The Man From Atlantis"! The movie was about the last surviving citizen of the lost city of Atlantis. He is rescued by a research organization called "The Foundation for Oceanic Research" which they gave him the name of Mark Harris. Mark is able to swim very fast and go very deep underwater and is strong physically. Mark joins the crew of the "Cetacean" an ahead of its time submarine which in the eventual TV series was often pitted with the crew against a maniacal tycoon, Dr Schubert played by the late great Victor Buono. After this pilot, there were four more TV movies before a 13 episode TV series was produced which I hope Warner Archive will eventually release. I did not know that Hanna Barbera own the rights to this movie and possibly the series! There are no extras on this disc.

PLANET EARTH

Planet EarthPlanet Earth was the second of three attempts to get a new Science Fiction TV series on the air from the creative mind of Gene Roddenberry. This pilot focused on gender relations where a society of women ruled and men where slaves. The society also known as the "Confederacy of Ruth" was looking for the secrets of the "Sub Shuttles" that criss-cross the earth to spread their sphere of influence. One of the PAX team was severely wounded and needs medical help which the women are unwilling to give. The 1974 TV movie was shown on ABC and stars John Saxon this time as Dylan Hunt, Diane Muldaur as Marg, Leader of the Ruth and once again Ted Cassidy as Islah. Majel Barrett Roddenberry also stars. Warner Archive has put this movie on DVD for the first time. The quality is quite good considering the age of the prints. There are no extras on this disc.
